Espressif released ESP32-S2 SoC Chipset

Shanghai Lesin Technology ESpressif recently released the latest product of ESP32 family ESP32-S2. The biggest highlight of ESP32-S2 is the support of multiple GPIO, the number of GPIO is 43, while the previous version, namely ESP32-S1, has the maximum of 34 GPIO. The ESP32-S1 is a Xtensa 32-bit LX7 single core processor with a 240 MHz primary frequency, while the ESP32-S1 is a Xtensa 32-bit LX6 single/dual core processor with a 240 MHz primary frequency.


ESP32-S2 features low power 2.4GHz Wi-Fi applications, right! There's only WiFi, and the band is still 2.4GHz, and Bluetooth has been axed. Of course, if there's only 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, we know we already have ESP8266, so why make ESP32-S2?


The ESP32-S2 is an upgrade to the ESP8266, which has a built-in Tensilica L106 32-bit RISC processor with a clock speed of up to 160 MHz. However, the performance of ESP32-S2 is much higher than that of ESP8266.


ESP32-S2 has an on-chip memory resource of 320 KB SRAM, 128 KB ROM, 16 KB RTC memory, and supports external SPIRAM (up to 128 MB) and up to 1 GB of external Flash. Compared to the ESP8266, the storage resources are much looser and can support more complex applications such as the Internet of Things, wearables and smart home.

The optimal power consumption


The ESP32-S2 supports fine-resolution power control by selecting clock frequency, duty cycle, Wi-Fi operation mode, and individual power control for internal components.


When Wi-Fi is enabled, the chip automatically turns the RF transceiver on and off only when needed, reducing the overall power consumption of the system.


At 1% duty cycle current consumption, the no-load mode of the ultra-low power coprocessor is 5 μA and 7 μA, respectively.
